Did you know that one of out of every five Californians moves every year?
This means you’re in good company - and that California movers have quite a bit of experience.
California moving regulations:
California has rules, regulations and price limits for moving. Any California moving company should be able to give you this information for review. You can also get it from California’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC). The phone number is 1-800-FON-4PUC.
The above phone number is also the place you’d call if you were having an unresolved dispute with a California mover and needed more help figuring things out.
California’s PUC also has other rules to protect you during your move. For example, if your California moving service can’t make the pickup or delivery date you agreed upon, they must notify you at least 24 hours in advance.
Choosing a California Mover:
Even with all the safeguards the state of California has put in place to make your move as safe as possible, it helps to select a reliable moving company so that you don’t need to worry about future problems or disputes.
Start with the basics. Make sure that your California movers are licensed and insured. PUC licensing numbers for California movers start with the letter "T" (Please note that MyMovingNeeds.com works only with licensed movers. If they don’t have a license, you won’t be getting a quote from them through us).
Next, get a written moving estimate. This is very important, since verbal estimates are not binding. When getting an estimate, make sure you describe everything that could influence you move. You can also read our article on how to get an accurate moving estimate.
If you’re arranging your move more than 3 days in advance, California moving companies are required to provide you with a moving Agreement. This important document will detail all the arrangements made with your California moving company and will also include a "Not to Exceed Price" clause. This means that unless you request additional services or something unexpected comes up on your end, the California moving company you hired will abide by the "not to exceed price" on the agreement.
Long distance moving from California:
California’s long distance moving is defined as any move over 100 constructive miles (constructive miles are miles accounting for the driving conditions). Any move less than 100 constructive miles is a local California move and is usually charged by the hour. Long distance moves are charged differently. Please refer to our article on long distance moving charges for more information.
