It is not unusual for a moving company to have one group of guys show up to pack and load your stuff and another group of guys who actually drive it. Many countrywide van lines load your belongings and take them to the nearest local site while they wait for the nationwide truck from their company to come by. This is common practice, and it is legitimate.
What is more concerning, however, is when small, independent companies share jobs without your knowledge. As a result, although your belongings may be picked up by someone from America's Best movers, they may arrive in a truck with another business logo that is driven by workers from yet another company. Needless to say, this makes it very difficult to keep track of your belongs and the party responsible for them.
The key here is to make sure your company is upfront and explicit about their practices. Are trucks clearly marked? Do drivers wear marked shirts and carry cell phones? Do they subcontract? Be wary of subcontracting unless the procedures are clearly explained and the interstate moving company appears to be on the up and up.
